CEDAR RAPIDS - More than 130 Linn County congregations  have been invited to attend a "Picnic on the Prairie" to re-create a historic
tradition  and to help collect food and money for HACAP and CrossRoads Mission.
The picnic is planned for 11 a.m. June 1 at Ushers Ferry Historic
Village and is open to anyone who wants to attend, said Deacon D.E.
"Pat" Kane, director of CrossRoads Mission. The picnic will
commemorate  Sundays of a century ago when faith communities would gather after worship for lunch and games.
"We're just looking for a good day of fellowship  after church to kind of re-create that era," Kane said.
The event will include contemporary Christian music at the gazebo, the singing of traditional hymns in the church, games and a "box auction"  at 2 p.m. All of the buildings  at Ushers Ferry, 5925 Seminole Valley Trl. NE, will be open so visitors can view the displays.
Everyone who attends is asked to bring their own picnic lunch, place settings, blankets and lawn chairs.
An offering will be taken to raise funds for CrossRoads Mission, an organization designed  to serve the "disenfranchised"  in Cedar Rapids and Linn County. People are asked to donate non-perishable food items that will go to the HACAP Food Reservoir, as well, Kane
said.  CrossRoads Mission, 526 Third Ave. SW, was opened in January 2007 and has provided food to nearly 3,900 people and clothing to a little more than 2,000 people. More than 600 family units have been served, Kane said.

Directions to Usher's Ferry -- Exit Interstate-380 at 42nd Street in Cedar Rapids. Go west about 3 miles. Turn south (left) on Seminole Valley Road and travel about 1 mile. Then turn east (left) and travel about 1/3 mile to the front gate of Ushers Ferry Historic Village.

Periodically Crossroads Mission hosts special events.  Read about the events here. If you would like to be part of these events -- either as a guest or a volunteer please call  319.365.0707  or e-mail  the director of the mission, Pat Kane at  diakonospat@msn.com
